How can training for mentor teachers increase sustainability of a new teacher mentoring program and decrease turnover and attrition?

Please, please let me know your true thoughts about this action research plan!  I had the opportunity to discuss it with an educator friend who is close to retirement.  She had so much good information that helped me to focus!  I look forward to hearing some of your thoughts as well...good and bad!

  1. Wow Casey!!! This looks great! I can't tell you how excited I am about your research project! I can remember being a "newbie" and feeling so scared and confused. I know that during that first year I thought to myself a time or two, "What the heck have I gotten myself into???" Luckily, I had a wonderful mentor teacher, who simply chose to help me out of the kindness of her heart... she wasn't required or paid to do so. At my first school, we did not have any sort of mentoring program in place. Therefore, many new teachers became frustrated and left the profession. I look forward to learning about your project as these course progress. I know that your research will help so many wonderful teachers along the way!!!

  3. Casey, your plan looks great. I know that the high school will benefit greatly from a new teacher mentor program. My only suggestion is to maybe meet with the new teachers without their mentor. That would give them the opportunity to voice any concerns they may have. I know some veteran teachers like to say that they love to help others, but often times they "just don't have the time".
